Genghis Khan was a charismatic and fearsome figure. He and his armies were known for their cruelty and barbarity, and the sight of them advancing across the battlefield in a storm of dust, the earth shaking with the thunder of 50,000 hooves, was enough to send enemies into retreat.
The thought alone of this terrible, bloodthirsty, and mighty warrior was enough to rout enemy armies. Genghis Khan was a man of absolute will and power, a frightening presence of power and vengeance. He was a horseman of the Apocalypse.
There have been many successful armies in the world. Julius Caesar, Scipio Africanus, Pompey the Great, and Marcus Agrippa were as brilliant generals as Genghis Khan, and brought Roman organization, discipline, and management to the battle.
They won because of superior ability, armaments, and military thinking; yet it was Genghis Khan who, with an almost untamed savagery, conquered the world. At its height the Mongol Empire extended from far eastern China to the Danube, the biggest empire the world has ever seen.
Genghis Khan was a brilliant strategist, canny politician who through tact, intimidation, and offers of great spoils, enticed the warlike Turkic tribes to join his armies, nearly doubling their strength.
However, it was not only the might of his imposing armies, nor his ability to manage, discipline, and control such a large and diverse military force; nor even his tactical acumen and understanding of calculated risk which assured victory. It was his indomitable, absolute, unalloyed will.
Khan had no qualms, moral reservations, or ethical hesitancy. Wars were for winning, civilians were complicit enemies, and total annihilation of any opposition was his modus belli. Not only would defeated populations be without the wherewithal to mount a resistance or counterattack, they would never dare to incite the bloody, murderous, savage wrath of the conqueror.
'Genghis Khan is my hero', Donald Trump confided to his advisors shortly after America's successful putsch in Venezuela, removing the dictator from power and installing an American regime in his place. Of course the President denied that America would rule, run, or own the country, but it sure felt like that.
This Genghis Khan-Donald Trump scenario is of course the Left's worst nightmare. They have labeled the President in every possible way - a tyrant, a royal pretender, a criminal, spawn of the Devil, racist, misogynist, homophobic bigot, crony capitalist, fool - but nothing has stuck, turning liberals into a crowd of squawking harridans.
The Left thought they had the President cornered during his first term, the famous January 6th 'insurrection'. They caught him with his pants down, they thought, the leader of a putsch to take over Congress, install martial law, and run the country as a totalitarian dictatorship. This, they said, was Trump showing his true colors.
Not content with simply dismantling the levers of democratic government, they said, he was intent on overthrow, a violent move to replace liberal democracy with tyrannical rule. This was a channeling of Genghis Khan and his armies which thundered down from the steppes to conquer the world.
Of course it was all nonsense. The 'insurrection' was nothing more than drunken frat boys in Viking hats and fright wigs in Washington to do some damage, a Spring Break run amok, an orgy of dummies come out of the backwoods to relieve the boredom of rain, wind, dope, and cheap women.
The ragtag bunch of hairy, Halloween-costumed wing nuts who stormed the steps of the Capitol needed to be stopped like any other bunch of hoodlums, street thugs, and wooly crazies. The fact that this gang of louts, pimps, crackers, and wackos got as far as they did was a testimony to their inchoate and wild ambitions.
They were not neutralized and stopped well before the events at the Capitol exactly because they were simply toothless, aimless, leftovers. Stopped they were, and as much as the progressive Left insists that this was indeed an attempted coup orchestrated by none other than Donald Trump, the nation saw Halloween gone bad.
It only gets worse, say the Left. Now that Donald Trump is in his second and last term, he can act with impunity; and because he will leave office and return to a life of wealth, sybaritic luxury, and complete indifference to the wailing cries of Washington, he is even more dangerous than before.
His bulldozing of USAID by the DOGE juggernaut, his deployment of ICE thugs in an ethnic cleansing no different than that of Nazi Germany, is just another sign of his treasonous, tyrannical intentions.
The American Left has a vision problem - they have not been able to see beyond the very fiction they created, a confection of delirious proportions.
Hilarious, raucous laughter was heard in the palaces of African big men when news of the ‘attempted coup’ in Washington broke. Government and military leaders and their political claques howled with delight over the events of January 6th which proved beyond a doubt that the United States was a withdrawn, myopic, self-important nation with no sense of proportion; all of which boded well for these ragged, failing societies which understood that no nation which so misunderstood human nature and its most violent expressions would ever be feared.
You want insurrection? the big men asked. Look at the civil wars of Angola, Zaire, Sierra Leone, and Liberia – violent, savage, brutal excesses for the sake of dominion over land, natural resources, or simply power.
The conflicts in Sierra Leone and Liberia were perhaps the most stunning in their barbarity. Child soldiers were kidnapped from poverty, trained in the art of killing, and sent off to massacre the enemy which sent the same badly trained, brainwashed children into battle.
The subcontinental African conflict between Angolan rebels and South African regulars was no less savage and left Angola in a state of perennial war. In Africa there are no such things as easy Western-style lines of engagement. Every tribal group wants in, and no chance to up the ante, rise up the ranks, and make money is lost. The vast wealth of Angola – oil, diamonds, and minerals – is worth fighting for; so when the more traditional war ended, the real battle for turf and population control continued.
A porous mentality governs the Left. The fabulist notions of gender fluidity, open borders, redistribution of wealth, climate Armageddon, and the Olympian nature of the black man have become received wisdom, ipso facto true and absolute, beyond questioning. The notion that Donald Trump is another Adolf Hitler, architect of pogroms, extermination, and mass destruction, the most addled idea of them all has been touted, flogged as the truth.
'The barbarians are at the gates', progressives shout, but realize they have nothing but stick arrows and rubber spears in the armory. In the more than ten years that they have been hammering away at Donald Trump for the same inchoate, inane reasons, they still remain a party of caterwaulers and streetcorner prophets, Chicken Littles banded together in fantasy. There is no there there, no meat, nothing but airy ideas pulled out of left field.
The coming reign of terror would be bad enough if it weren't for the fact that Donald Trump is a rube, a second-rate vaudevillian, a clown, a meretricious, bourgeois fool. His yachts, resorts, arm candy, runway queens, and starlets reek of lowbrow culture.
His is an administration of bimbos, and once he assumes supreme power, he will turn the whole country into a sequined, costume jeweled, joke. The ballroom, an absurdly low-bourgeois atrocity and the Disneyland Arc de Triomphe are but examples of what is to come.
This is what the Left fears most - barbarians without a scintilla of real culture, an empty-headed clutch, a dimwitted, bunch of dopes. It isn't so much that Trump will take over all the reins of power and turn America into North Korea West, but that it is all just so...distasteful.
In that sense the Left is right - Trump has swept away the last traces of faux Eastern political aristocracy. His populism was not simply the enfranchisement of the heartland, but a championing of its culture - one that has more in common with Las Vegas, Hollywood, and Country and Western than Georgetown, Rittenhouse Square, or Beacon Hill; and even far more than the 'diverse' corners of Brooklyn, Anacostia, East St. Louis, or West Baltimore. A horrendously white, middle class, nation of simpletons.
Finally the exceptionalist posturing is over. America is not the shining light on a hill, a beacon of hope, a champion of the rights of man, a model of civil rule but a lowbrow culture not far removed from the cathouses and saloons of Dodge. America has nothing to prove to the world, no ethos, canon, or moral code.
This is what sticks in the craw of the Left. They are important. They have meaning; but the train has left the station, and for all their harping, the country has moved on. The French were right - America is 'a soulless nation on an empty prairie'. No culture, no history, no empire, no nothing.
It takes a political genius to recognize, accept, and champion this. The Left has never understood Donald Trump and never will.
