The streets of Los Angeles looked like something out of a dystopian movie - the city aflame, cars torched, burning, and overturned, masked men throwing rocks at police, the deployment of SWAT teams, military riot units, and Marines.
Third World all over again - the riotous overthrow of successive governments in Thailand and Burma, the putsches in Argentina and Chile, the Brazilian disorder and political chaos since the Fifties, and the civil wars in Sudan, Ethiopia, and Somalia.
Can’t happen here, said many. Progressives barking up the wrong tree planted signs throughout liberal neighborhoods shouting Democracy Matters! and pointed the finger at Donald Trump and the faux, frat boy hijinks of January 7th. 'Autocrat, dictator, insurrectionist, anti-democrat', they howled, while they were the ones sowing seeds of anarchy, civil unrest, violence, and anti-Americanism.
Progressives? The political movement dedicated to inclusivity, equity, and diversity? The one that promised a verdant, peaceful, harmonious utopia? Impossible. It had to be the rabid right wing, the MAGA wingnuts, the insurrectionists planning overthrow from sanctuaries in the Idaho Panhandle and the Oregon north woods.
These were the dangerous, seditious, violent enemy of the State, and unless their leader, the neo-Hitler in the White House were defeated by any means possible, the cherished American polity would be dissolved and the nation would devolve into SS Gestapo horror.
However, it was the identity clamor of the Left which provided the enabling environment for the riotous civil unrest crippling and destroying Los Angeles. Having deified illegal immigrants described disingenuously as poor, marginalized, put upon, oppressed good black and brown people - and welcomed ten million or more of them across the border, progressives are responsible for the disorder, violence, and mayhem.
Not only have these illegal immigrants been lionized, coddled, and prioritized, the police have been demonized. Movements to defund the police - a brutal, racist, murderous institution progressives say - proliferated throughout the blue states of the US. Their ranks were diminished, their powers curbed, their rules of engagement reversed to favor the criminal.
The standoff between mobs of illegal immigrants and the police should be surprising to no one. These Mexicans, Hondurans, Salvadorans, and Nicaraguans had been told by the Biden Administration that they were welcome and entitled to every economic, social, and legal benefit as longstanding citizens enjoyed; and have been encouraged and propelled by the notion that the police and the military are simply arms of the autocratic state, the oppressors, the enemy.
Burning and stoning the cars of the state is a patriotic, heroic act, says the Left. Resisting the police that murdered George Floyd and punitively assaulted the inner city in racist pogroms is an act of civil right, not civic disorder. It was the perfect storm of entitled rights, Third World unschooled primitivism, and vitriolic hatred of authority.
The police, still bound by illusionistic restrictions, cannot restrain rioters who are looting and destroying small businesses, defacing the fronts of banks and established companies, and trashing downtown communities. Any offensive action by the police - rounding up wholescale the rioters and sorting them out later a la El Salvador and the Philippines - will be attacked by the Left as yet another example of police brutality and uncontrolled state power.
The governor of California and the Mayor of Los Angeles have condemned the unwelcome intrusion of the National Guard and the US military, and have let the rioters go unchecked and unpunished. Local police are hamstrung, hands tied behind their backs as they watch the mayhem and are assaulted by rioters.
The legacy media are collusive in all this, calling the riots peaceful protests and expressions of free speech, ignoring the tumult, the fire and smoke, and the attacks on police and ICE vehicles.
Identity politics and DEI (Diversity Equity Inclusiveness) are at the very core of the current unrest. Under this supposition everyone but white Americans, no matter who they are or how they came to America, take precedence. To vet, scrutinize, sort, and triage is tantamount to racism. Brown and black people, because of their history of oppression, poverty, and discrimination have, ipso facto, the right to special protection and reserved status.
They do not have to hew to the same rules and regulations as whites because it is whites who are the perpetrators of racism and who have created a country of 'systemic racism' from which black and brown people cannot escape.
The riots, say progressives, are what you get in a society like America's. The oppressed have every right to express their frustration and anger, and if it is violent so be it. Maybe then racist America will pay attention.
The riots are the explosive result of damaging, corrosive, destructive progressive policies; and it took only the actions of a new President, supported by the millions who, tired of progressive badgering and anti-democratic political putsches, voted him into office to light the fuse and set off the explosions. Trump was the spark, but the piles of fuel-soaked rags, trash, and detritus were the making of the progressive Left. Blood is on their hands.
Politically, the images of these riots - masked men atop smoking police cars waving Mexican flags - are ready made for Republican campaigns before the mid-term elections next year where the makeup of both House and Senate will be at stake. What American can look at the violence, looting, and universal criminality and not blame the Left - not only California's and Los Angeles' refusal to take concerted action to stop the rioting, but the fateful identity polemic of the Left which encouraged and fomented it?
The Trump Administration has said to immigrants, you are welcome if you come here legally, but you will be deported if you are not; and the identification, arrest, and deportation of illegal aliens is a just action according to law. What is not to understand? Unvetted, unmitigated, unreviewed immigration is not in America's interests.
That message resonates with the American electorate just as it has in Poland, Hungary, France, Italy, Germany, the Netherlands, Sweden and other European countries suffering their own version of illegal migratory disruption. Whatever the outcome of the now infamous Los Angeles riots, the legacy will only be one of strengthening the conservative Right - long overdue, already on its way to changing the world political landscape, but now certain.
